Achievement Award
LINCOLN—The Association of Association Educators (A2E) has
announced that the Nebraska Hospital Association’s “One Book One Hospital”
program has been selected as the recipient of their 2010 Outstanding Association
Achievement Award. A2E is affiliated with the American Hospital Association and
its members include over 100 health care education professionals who design,
market, coordinate and plan education programs and special events for hospital
and health care associations across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
The Outstanding Association Achievement Award recognizes a significant
achievement by a hospital or health system association in the area of education,
which represents an outstanding milestone in health care education.
The Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) began its One Book One
Hospital program in 2007. “One Book” projects are community-wide reading
programs initiated by the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public
Library in 1998. Jon Borton, NHA vice president of educational services says,
“After observing successful reading programs in the Capitol City (One Book One
Lincoln) and state (One Book One Nebraska), Association staff entertained the
idea of providing the opportunity for books to unite NHAs member hospitals in
both statewide group discussions and hospital-wide group discussions.”

State of the Union 2011:
'Win the future,' Obama says
WASHINGTON—President Obama sought to rouse the
nation from complacency in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, January
25, urging innovation and budget reforms that he said are vital to keep the
United States a leader in an increasingly competitive world.
"Sustaining the American dream has never
been about standing pat," Obama said. "It has required each generation to
sacrifice, and struggle and meet the demands of a new age. Now it's our turn."
Obama repeatedly declared the imperative to "win the future," comparing the
current need for innovation to the space race against the Soviet Union in the
1950s and '60s. Calling for more dedication to research and technology as he
raised the specter of a rapidly growing China and India, Obama declared: "This
is our generation's Sputnik moment."

House GOP works on health solutions
WASHINGTON—Wasting no time, House Republicans moved quickly
ahead Thursday with their own overhaul of the nation’s health care system,
commanding key committees to get to work and launching a fresh attack on federal
policies regarding abortion funding.
One day after voting to repeal President Obama‘s health care
law, the House approved a resolution directing four committees to write bills
aimed at preserving some of the more popular parts of the Democrats' law, such
as requiring coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, while also
addressing the GOP‘s desire to curb malpractice lawsuits and prohibit taxpayer
funding of abortions.
“Having taken that action to wipe the slate clean, we are now
moving on to the far more challenging task of crafting real solutions for the
American people,” Rep. David Dreier, California Republican, who now chairs the
House Rules Committee, said on the House floor.

NHA 2011 Advocacy Day is a half-day workshop designed to
provide hospital CEOs, advocacy team members, trustees, key hospital staff,
state senators and their staff, leaders of HHS and other state heath care
advocates with important information about state and federal legislative issues.
This event highlights the legislative issues that could
impact Nebraska hospitals and health systems, and their ability to deliver
quality and affordable health care services. In addition, it provides health
care advocates with the opportunity to visit with their state senators to help
them understand how legislation will affect health care in Nebraska.

Bill would address clinical privileges for midwives
LINCOLN—The Health and Human Services Committee heard
testimony Jan. 20 on a measure that would prevent denial of credentials to
individuals solely based on their classification as certified nurse midwives.
LB68, introduced by Lincoln Sen. Tony Fulton, would add
certified nurse midwives to the list of practitioners who cannot be denied
clinical privileges based on their credential by any hospital licensed under the
Health Care Facility Licensure Act.
Fulton said certified nurse midwives who have a practice
agreement with a supervising physician may practice midwifery at the physician’s
office or at a facility where they have been granted privileges. However, there
appear to be cases where midwives have been denied privileges at hospitals for
no other reason than belonging to the category of certified nurse midwife, he
said. READ MORE»

Survey: Most Americans unaware of mental health parity law
Nearly 90% of Americans have not heard of the Mental Health
Parity and Addiction Equity Act, according to a December
poll by the
American Psychological Association. The 2008 federal law, supported by the AHA,
requires group health plans that offer mental health benefits to provide full
parity for physical and mental health coverage. Forty-five percent of adults
surveyed were unsure whether their insurance reimburses for mental health care,
and three in ten did not know if they had adequate mental health coverage.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 26% of American
adults have a diagnosable mental health disorder, of which only one-third
receive care.
