LINCOLN—Governor Dave Heineman will do what is required under the federal health care reform legislation that he opposes.
But it is unclear whether he will go any further, by seeking grants or applying for demonstration projects.
The governor refused to participate in the high-risk insurance program, the first phase of federal health care reform, saying it does not have adequate funding.
Last week, the governor said he doesn't know if he will be seeking a $1 million grant now available to all states to help pay costs of establishing what are called exchanges, an important state piece of health care reform.

LINCOLN—As medical costs rise, and the need for Medicaid Reform continues,
the DHHS is working on a solution that helps retain quality primary care physicians in Nebraska while improving health care and access for citizens.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), in collaboration with the Medical Home Advisory Council, will be implementing a new two-year Medicaid patient-centered medical home pilot involving the specialties of Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine and/or Pediatrics.
The pilot will be in two to three practices in one or more of these communities: Scottsbluff, Sidney, Ogallala, North Platte, McCook, Lexington, Kearney, Holdrege, Hastings, Grand Island, Columbus and Norfolk. These communities were selected because they are not in a Medicaid Managed Care county and have practices that reflect a sufficient number of Medicaid patients to be able to evaluate the pilot.

ROCKVILLE, MD—U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that expanded enrollment in the 340B Drug Pricing Program began
August 2. Administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the expansion of the 340B program will make discounted medications available to new enrollees including children’s hospitals, free standing cancer centers, critical access hospitals, rural referral centers, and sole community hospitals. These facilities can save an average of 20 percent to 50 percent of the cost for covered outpatient medications.

OMAHA—The first time University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) family medicine faculty member Tina Flores, M.D., saw a cadaver, it was as a student in a program similar to UNMC's Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP).
Underrepresented, disadvantaged and rural students will continue to have such opportunities at UNMC thanks to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) decision to reauthorize SMDEP at the medical center through 2011.
The program—which is funded by RWJF with matching support from UNMC—exposes such students, as well as those who have genuine desire to serve in underserved and rural communities, to medical and dental education. It helps participants gain the skills needed to be accepted to and successful in medical and dental school.

WASHINGTON—Republicans may not be able to repeal the Democrats’ health care reform law next year, but they’re eyeing the next best thing: denying the Obama administration the money it needs to implement the law.
GOP candidates across the country are running on a promise to repeal the law. But simply winning the House and Senate wouldn’t get them there; they'd need to corral two-thirds majorities to overcome what would be an almost certain veto from President Barack Obama.
