LINCOLN—Local clinicians had difficulty estimating how big the splash would be from a free medical clinic that opened at the People's City Mission

Little was known beyond the nice features of the remodeled clinic building at 401 N. Second Street.
Pastor Tom Barber, the mission's director, prefers the creative independence that comes with operating outside the grant process with its emphasis on collaboration.

WASHINGTON—New census data released Tuesday confirm a huge spread in the rate of uninsured from state to state and the big difference in impact that can be expected as a result of the health care overhaul recently passed by Congress.
The statistics are for 2007 and show health insurance coverage by state and for each of the country's roughly 3,140 counties.
The numbers do not include the impact on millions of people who lost their jobs and health insurance after the recession began in December 2007.

WASHINGTON—A group of lawmakers, many of whom voted against the Democrats’
health care overhaul, are asking the administration to preserve a role in the
renovated health system for insurance agents and brokers. They fear becoming an
endangered species under the new law, just as travel agents have suffered from
the availability of Web-based booking offered by companies such as Travelocity
and Expedia. Read

WASHINGTON—Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) this week continued his push to eliminate a controversial tax-reporting provision of the new health care reform law, vowing to offer his repeal bill at every turn.
“I will file this amendment on every viable vehicle that comes to the Senate floor,” Johanns said Monday at a health care forum hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “Sooner or later, we’ll get a vote and we’ll see who stands with our job creators and who does not.”
