Burn Center Director urges caution, common sense with fireworks

OMAHA—Fireworks are colorful and exciting, but also unpredictable and dangerous. It’s important to remember basic fireworks safety during this July 4th holiday. The Burn Unit at The Nebraska Medical Center typically treats more than a dozen fireworks-related injuries from mid-June to mid-July. Most of the patients recover with outpatient care; but a few are hurt badly enough to require a hospital stay.

“The best advice is to go to a public fireworks show and watch the professionals do it,” said Debra Reilly, MD, director of the burn center at The Nebraska Medical Center.

Some adults see sparklers as safer alternatives for children. But Dr. Reilly reminds everyone sparklers burn at 1,000 degrees and remain hot even after the spark has gone out. Read more.

Baltimore, MD—The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is working with providers to address concerns about enrollment in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries continue to receive the health care services and items they need. High-risk insurance pools begin enrollment

WASHINGTON—Most high-risk insurance pools for patients who can't obtain coverage because of pre-existing conditions began enrollment today, slightly past the 90-day deadline established by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Under the legislation, states had the option of administering their own plans or letting their residents opt-in to a plan run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Twenty-nine states plus the District of Columbia decided to operate their own plans with funding from the federal government. The remaining 21 will rely on the federal Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP), the name for the high-risk pools announced by Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today.

UNMC ranked among top 40 academic workplaces

OMAHA—The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is among the top 40 places to work in U.S. academia, according to TheScientist.com. Results from a survey of faculty and staff at academic institutions around the nation show that UNMC ranked No. 39, up 32 spots from its No. 71 ranking in 2009.
