LINCOLN—The Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) will celebrate World Blood Donor Day
June 14-18, 2010 with a variety of special events. This year everyone is all abuzz about the Human Blood Drop, people dressed in red shirts forming a blood drop. Please join
NCBB Friday, June 18, in the south parking lot of Southeast Community College, 8800 “O” Street as we form a Human Blood Drop and attempt to set a new world record. The goal is to exceed 1,000 participants, the number of donors needed each week to meet the blood needs of the patients we serve. The blood drop will begin forming at 3:00 p.m. with pictures taken at 3:30 p.m.
Free red ‘Give’ t-shirts along with a Nebraska lottery ticket will be given to the first 800 adults registered. Everyone in the community is welcome, so invite your friends and family to wear red and join us June 18. To register, visit

LINCOLN—LifeNet of the Heartland Air Medical Service, owned and operated by Air Methods Corporation, is proud to announce
its successful reaccreditation from The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS). LifeNet of the Heartland has base locations in Omaha, Norfolk and St. Joseph, Missouri. CAMTS is an independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of patient care and safety of the transport environment for services providing helicopter, fixed wing (plane) and ground transport systems. Participation in the accreditation process is voluntary and requires a tremendous undertaking by transport agencies to ensure they meet both domestic and international standards set by CAMTS. This accreditation process includes both a site survey and submission documentation supporting the programs operations and adherence to the standards set by CAMTS.

FREMONT—Fremont Area Medical Center (FAMC) observed its 70th anniversary on May 23.
Prior to the establishment of FAMC, health care in Fremont was characterized by the opening and closing of several small hospitals, and Dodge County was in serious need of a modern, fire-proof facility with enough room to accommodate the sick and suffering in the county. With a combination of government grant money, county tax dollars and private donations, ground was broken on the $167,000 project in December 1938.

OAKLAND—Oakland Mercy Hospital observed its 60th anniversary on Saturday, June 5 with a celebration and health fair. The event was held from 8 a.m. until
noon. Oakland Mercy Hospital began as Oakland Memorial Hospital, opening its doors January 15, 1950 to admit the first patient. Oakland Memorial was one of the first three hospitals in Nebraska constructed with federal money.

OMAHA—An Omaha man is recovering well today after undergoing an historic operation at The Nebraska Medical Center on May 18. David Gildea was the first patient at the medical center to receive a combined heart and kidney transplant.
“This is an exciting milestone for our transplant program,” said John Um, M.D.,
heart transplant surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. “This is a vital
treatment option for patients in our region who have advanced heart failure and
renal disease.”

Aster Awards Program. The Aster Awards is a medical marketing awards program allowing health care organizations and advertising agencies to compete against similarly sized competitors from across the nation and world.
Each year the Aster Awards has an annual contest allowing entries designed, printed and/or distributed the previous year to be scored, judged and recognized for excellence in health care marketing and advertising.

WASHINGTON—Part of the health care overhaul due to kick in this September could
strip more than 1 million people of their insurance coverage, Politico reports.
Under the provision, insurance companies will no longer be able to apply broad
annual caps on the amount of money they pay out on health policies. Employer
groups say the ban could essentially wipe out a niche insurance market that many
part-time workers and retail and restaurant employees have come to rely on.
