WASHINGTON—UnitedHealth Group Inc. and its rivals in the managed-care industry are gearing up to go after one of the biggest new markets to be created by the new federal health care law: the roughly 16 million new people expected to be eligible for insurance coverage under state Medicaid programs, the
Wall Street Journal reports. The Minnetonka, MN-based insurer is releasing a report describing a variety of managed-care strategies it says will help cash-strapped states solve budget problems and doctor shortages that hobble Medicaid.

When Methodist Women’s Hospital opens to patients on June 21, it will include a fully functioning Heidi Wilke SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner)/SART

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a
workbook to help children's hospitals and general hospitals coordinate care for children with flu-like illness during a flu pandemic. Compiled from a discussion of hospital issues at a CDC meeting last September on the pediatric care response to H1N1 flu, the tool identifies steps and resources to help both types of hospital plan and coordinate their response in areas such as surge capacity, staffing, patient care and triage. "Users of the workbook may find it helpful if their community hospitals are able to access accurate and real-time data on the number of pandemic influenza cases in its community and the severity of illness in these cases," the authors note.
