DHHS receives grant for reproductive health services

LINCOLN—The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking community-based providers from across the state to make family planning and reproductive health services available to low-income persons. Approximately $1.8 million for family planning and reproductive health services will be available for a 12-month period, thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs. HHS awards $100 million in CHIPRA grants to states

WASHINGTON—The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently awarded states $100 million in grants to test child health quality measures and implement health information technologies for children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program. Funded by the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) of 2009, the five-year grants will support projects in 18 states, including two states that plan to develop an electronic health record for children. Accountable Care Alliance announced

OMAHA—Methodist Health System, The Nebraska Medical Center, and their affiliated physicians are joining together to form the Accountable Care Alliance. This partnership is being developed to reduce costs to patients and to improve quality and efficiency of patient care across the two health systems.

The Accountable Care Alliance will be structured like an accountable care organization, one of the models being considered by the federal government under health care reform as a way to reduce health care costs. An accountable care organization is an integrated health care delivery system that relies on a network of primary care physicians, specialists and hospitals that are held responsible for the quality and cost of health care to a defined patient population. BryanLGH recognizes trauma survivors; honors trauma professionals

LINCOLN—The February 18 Tribute to Trauma Champions was truly a night of celebration and thanksgiving. The annual event was held to recognize the medical expertise, tireless dedication and teamwork required among the many health care specialties to successfully care for a single trauma patient. From EMS first responders to trauma care professionals at the Trauma Center to rehabilitation staff members and those who help patients return home, a coordinated system of care is vital to treat our region’s most critically injured patients.

UNMC College of Pharmacy moves up to fourth in research rankings

OMAHA—The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy now ranks fourth nationally among 110 pharmacy schools in funding per researcher from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The college moved up two spaces from sixth last year. The rankings—compiled annually by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)—show that the College of Pharmacy's doctoral-level investigators collectively received more than $6.6 million in NIH funds in 2009. That is a 31 percent increase in NIH funds from 2008, when the college's researchers collectively brought in about $5 million. Read more.

Hospital licensure moratorium proposed

LINCOLN—The Health and Human Services Committee heard testimony February 24 on a bill that would provide for a two-year moratorium on the issuance of new hospital licenses in Nebraska. LB 999, sponsored by Lincoln Senator Kathy Campbell, would direct the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services not to accept applications from or issue licenses to new hospitals from September 1, 2010 through August 31, 2012. The bill makes an exception for critical access hospitals. Read more.

Prenatal Medicaid bill hearing held today

LINCOLN—The Legislature today heard testimony regarding LB 1110. This bill, introduced by Lincoln Senator Kathy Campbell, would change provisions relating to coverage for certain children under the Medical Assistance Program as prescribed. Senators voted February 17 to suspend the Legislature’s rules and allow the introduction of a bill meant to address a gap in Medicaid eligibility for low-income, pregnant women. The state recently was notified that its means of determining Medicaid eligibility for the families of pregnant women was in violation of federal guidelines. As a result, benefits for many unborn children will terminate March 1, 2010.

Abortion hearing draws greater security

LINCOLN—As the Legislature's Judiciary Committee got ready Thursday afternoon to hear a bill (LB 1103) on late-term abortion, experts from both sides attempted to get their viewpoints out early. For the first time, Capitol security moved a metal detector in front of the door to the hearing room where the Judiciary Committee would hear testimony. If the bill would pass, Nebraska would be the first to outlaw most abortions past 20 weeks of gestation. Read more.

Obama readies a fallback health care proposal

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama will use a bipartisan summit to push for health care legislation, but if that fails to generate enough support the White House has prepared the outlines of a more modest plan. His leading alternate approach would provide health insurance to perhaps 15 million Americans, about half what the comprehensive bill would cover. It would do that by requiring insurance companies to allow people up to 26 years old to stay on their parents' health plans, and by modestly expanding two federal-state health programs, the Wall Street Journal reports. House votes to strip health insurance companies of antitrust exemption

WASHINGTON—The House voted to strip health insurance companies of their exemption from federal antitrust laws. The provision passed on a 406 to 19 vote, with most Republicans joining all the House Democrats in voting for the measure. President Obama has said he favors the idea of repealing the exemption, and House Democrats say doing so would add scrutiny to the practices of health insurers, the Washington Post reports. Senate passes jobs bill

WASHINGTON—The Senate overwhelmingly passed a $15 billion jobs bill Wednesday morning, giving Democrats—and embattled Majority Leader Harry Reid—a much needed legislative victory. A larger-than-expected number of GOP senators, led by Scott Brown of Massachusetts, pushed the bill to its 70-28 passage. Several more Republicans broke ranks with their leaders on final passage compared with a 62-30 procedural vote Monday, giving the bill a much more comfortable margin. Read more.
