Two months ago, lawmakers had to reduce spending by $334 million in a special session to balance the books.
Today lawmakers may provide hints at how stingy they will be, as they begin debating bills leftover from last year.
Senators might have to be even tighter with spending in light of news Friday that tax receipts in December were almost 10 percent less than expected.

Small businesses are responsible for three-quarters of all new jobs in the U.S., and it will be their efforts that get America back to work. Right now decisions are being made on Capitol Hill that will have an immediate impact on every small business in America. That is why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce—a national affiliate of the State Chamber—has unveiled U.S. Chamber Small Business Nation, a new online community where you can openly exchange information and ideas. The site has more than 4,000 pages of how-to business resources and tools, an advocacy center to educate and engage businesses on key legislative issues, and a discussion platform to facilitate the exchange of ideas and solutions.

NHPCP press release, January 12, 2009

LINCOLN—Nebraska could become one of several states challenging a provision in the federal health care reform package that would assess penalties against people who didn't obtain health insurance.
A proposed amendment (LR289CA) to the Nebraska Constitution introduced to the Legislature on Wednesday would bar the state from forcing people to buy insurance or fine people for not obtaining insurance.
Senator Beau McCoy of Omaha introduced the measure. He concedes that it would not trump federal law. But McCoy says it could help set up a federal court challenge of such a law.
Including Nebraska, lawmakers in almost 30 states have introduced or plan to introduce similar legislation.

"There's a big problem with the way the administration wants to pay for this," said Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY),
