WASHINGTON—Executives of three of the nation's largest health insurers told federal lawmakers in Washington that they would continue canceling medical coverage for some sick policyholders, despite withering criticism from Republican and Democratic members of Congress who decried the practice as unfair and abusive. An investigation by the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations showed that health insurers WellPoint Inc., UnitedHealth Group and Assurant Inc. canceled the coverage of more than 20,000 people, allowing the companies to avoid paying more than $300 million in medical claims over a five-year period.

INDIANAPOLIS—Employers who offer health insurance coverage could see a 9 percent cost increase next year, and their workers may face an even bigger hit, according to a report from consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Costs will rise in part because workers worried about losing their jobs are using their health care more while they still have it, the firm said in the report. The report also said rising unemployment is driving up medical costs.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has become aware of a scam where perpetrators are sending faxes to physician offices posing as the Medicare carrier or Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). The fax instructs physician staff to respond to a questionnaire to provide an account information update within 48 hours in order to prevent a gap in Medicare payments. The fax may have the CMS logo and/or the contractor logo to enhance the appearance of authenticity.
Medicare FFS providers, including physicians, non-physician practitioners, should be wary of this type of request.
If you receive a request for information in the manner described above, please check with your contractor before submitting any information. Medicare providers should only send information to a Medicare contractor using the address found in the download section of the CMS.gov

LINCOLN—The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) held a public hearing on
June 18 to discuss proposed changes to the Nebraska Administrative Code (NAC)
for the Nebraska Medicaid Managed Care Program, also known as the Nebraska
Health Connection, as well as the NAC for the Nebraska Medical Assistance
Program. The proposed changes to Nebraska Health Connection would
expand designated coverage areas of mandatory enrollment for managed care to
include Cass, Dodge, Gage, Otoe, Saunders, Seward and Washington Counties. The
proposed regulation changes to the NAC for the Nebraska Medical Assistance
Program would require prior authorization of select non-emergency outpatient
radiology procedures. The Nebraska Hospital Association
testified on behalf
of Nebraska's hospitals in opposition to both proposals.
WASHINGTON—The debate over an overhaul of the nation's health care system got off to a rocky start in the Senate as lawmakers delayed action on one key bill and engaged in partisan sniping over another. Senate leaders said they are still on track to put a bill on the floor by midsummer, but some Democrats privately acknowledged that piecing together a measure that will expand coverage to the uninsured is proving excruciatingly difficult, particularly if the goal is to pass a bill with Republican support.
