As a fresh poll measured the political cost of Senator Ben Nelson's health reform vote, he prepared Tuesday to take his case directly to Nebraskans during Wednesday night's Holiday Bowl game.
Nelson will air a new TV ad in which he attempts to debunk opposition claims that the Senate legislation represents a government takeover, and he makes the case for health care reform.
"With all the distortions about health care reform, I want you to hear directly from me," the Democratic senator says in the ad.

WASHINGTON—Medicare advocates say a growing number of older adults are getting ensnared in the program's complex rules, as more seniors return to work or put off leaving their jobs, the
Wall Street Journal reports. In January, Representative Kurt Schrader (D-OR) plans to introduce a bill designed to make it easier for those 65 and older who leave jobs to switch from their employer's group health insurance to Medicare. Among other things, the bill would eliminate the delays that some experience before their Medicare benefits go into effect.

LINCOLN—Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital recently received a gift of $1.2 million
from Dan Whitney, better known as "Larry the Cable Guy," and his wife, Cara, for the pediatric rehabilitation hospital expansion.
According to Madonna Rehabilitation President and CEO Marsha Lommel, Cara
Whitney watched this year's documentary of the journey to recovery from brain
injury and was touched by the stories of three children who came to Madonna
after the most severe of brain injuries.
Cara saw the miracle unfold as one-year-old Alexis Verzal, who was flown to
Madonna from Texas, blind and as limp as a rag doll, began to see again,
swallow, talk, walk, smile and become a quintessential, stubborn two-year old. She called with the news that the Git-R-Done Foundation would provide the 1.2 million dollars needed to make the pediatric rehabilitation hospital a reality.

CREIGHTON—Fifty-seven hospitals, including Creighton Area Health Services (CAHS),
now have videoconferencing capabilities in their emergency departments. "The goal in providing this
equipment as part of the Medical
Response Systems' efforts to help
develop overall hospital
preparedness is to enhance access
and a more solid continuum of care
for trauma and burn patients as well
as victims of disasters or public
health emergencies," said Laura
Meyers, Rural Nebraska Medical Response System Coordinator.
"Placement of videoconferencing
capabilities in the emergency department does not take any decision making
capabilities away from local practitioners, but instead allows colleagues across
the state to interact more effectively to provide the best care possible for the
patient from start to finish."

in part of a grant received by the
Nebraska Hospital Association to expand
the use of the Nebraska Statewide
Telehealth Network.

care provided to their patients by working
"live" with medical teams at larger
American College of Surgeons verified
trauma centers, burn centers, mental health hospitals or other hospitals.

WASHINGTON—Florida's attorney general has questioned the constitutionality of
the federal health care bill, and is calling on states to study whether to file
suit to kill a provision requiring that individuals buy health insurance or pay
a fine. William McCollum, a Republican who is running for governor in 2010, said
that the fine might be illegal because, in his view, it is disconnected from any
commercial act. The attorneys general of South Carolina and nearly a dozen other
states have also threatened to sue over the mandate, the New York Times
reports.

WASHINGTON—When the White House announced a deal with hospitals on health care reform, the major hospital trade groups took the stage. Nurses had their Rose Garden moment when they pledged support for reform.
But when President Barack Obama announced an agreement with PhRMA, arguably the single most important deal in the reform effort, drug makers were nowhere in sight. In their place, Obama invited the head of AARP, the popular seniors’ group.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expanding a voluntary recall to include all available
product lots of TYLENOL Arthritis Pain Caplet 100 count bottles, with the distinctive red EZ-OPEN CAP. Consumers who purchased this product should stop using the product and contact McNeil for instructions on a refund or replacement.
In November 2009, five lots of this product were recalled due to consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty or mildew-like odor that was associated with nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. The odor is caused by the presence of a chemical 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, believed to be the breakdown of a chemical used to treat wooden pallets that transport and store packaging materials. The health effects of this compound have not been well studied, and to date all of the observed events reported to McNeil were temporary and non-serious.
