NHA 2009 Annual Convention draws many health care professionals

LINCOLN—Nearly 800 hospital staff, allied health care members and others enjoyed the elegant surroundings of The Cornhusker Marriott Hotel for the NHA 2009 Annual Convention held October 14-16 in Lincoln. This year’s theme, “Nebraska Hospitals: A Mission to Care. The Vision to Lead,” encouraged and inspired health care leaders as they guide their hospitals and health care systems toward success beyond the horizon.

Nationally recognized visionaries in leadership provided guidance by addressing some of the most important issues and new developments in the health care environment. Attendees were presented practical and proven ideas for empowering leadership by speakers Harry Chambers; Joseph Grenny; Todd Linden; John Robbins, FACHE; Brian Wong, MD, MPH; and Sally Karioth, RN, PhD.

On Thursday, October 15, participants enjoyed the Trade Show with over 85 businesses who shared information and demonstrated their products and services. A lavish sponsors’ reception capped off the event, enticing participants and vendors to enjoy each other’s company while sampling a variety of delicious appetizers and beverages and listening to a jazz quartet.

On the last day of the convention, more than 500 guests gathered to honor Nebraska hospitals’ most caring individuals and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Caring Kind Luncheon, with the help of Sally Karioth, who presented “Care of the Caregiver.”

A total of 72 health care professionals were recognized for their efforts in improving patient care. During this luncheon, Bill Welch, CEO of Jefferson Community Health Center in Fairbury, received the Excellence in Service award, a commendation of his mission, vision and leadership of health care delivery in Nebraska. The Trustee of the Year recipient was Richard Russell, trustee of Children’s Hospital and Medical Center. Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and Jefferson Community Health Center in Fairbury were each presented with a Quest for Excellence award, and the Class VI graduates of the NHA Leadership Institute were also recognized. The 2009 Meritorious Service award winners included Craig Ames, former President and COO of BryanLGH Medical Center in Lincoln, and Joanne Arends of Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

The NHA Annual Convention was made possible by the generous support of many sponsors, including the Premier Sponsor LaMair-Mulock-Condon Co. Click here for a complete list of sponsors, detailed program information, link to photos and additional new releases.

House Democrats' desired health bill would cost $871 billion

WASHINGTON—House leaders have cut the cost of their health care overhaul to around $871 billion over the next decade, Democratic sources told the Washington Post, and were working to line up votes for the package with the aim of bringing it before the full House early in November. The $871 billion estimate—well under the $900 billion limit set by President Obama—is the latest of several versions scored by congressional budget analysts, a Democratic aide told the Post. Senate fails to advance bill to halt physician pay cut

WASHINGTON—The Senate failed Wednesday to achieve the 60 votes needed to invoke cloture on legislation (S. 1776) to fix the physician payment formula, failing by a vote of 47-53 to advance the bill. Introduced last week by Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), the $250 billion bill would freeze for 10 years Medicare payments for physicians, who face a 21 percent cut on January 1. The bill did not provide funding so would have added to the federal deficit.
