TIPS TO PREVENT FALLS
Help Us Reduce Your Risk of Falling

Accidental falls may occur in the hospital.   Some falls, such as those related to your medical condition or treatment cannot be avoided.  By following the guidelines below, you, your family and friends can help reduce your risk of falling.

*If you feel weak or dizzy, ask the nurse for help getting out of bed.   It helps to sit at the side of the bed briefly before standing or beginning to walk.

*When you walk in the hospital, wear non-skid slippers.

*Stay in your bed or chair after you have asked for help.  Someone will come to assist you as soon as possible.

*Do not lower the side rails or loosen restraints.  Side rails are reminders to stay in bed.  If restraints need adjustment, ask the nurses.

*Follow the doctor's and nurse's instructions about needing help with walking if you should remain in bed.

*If you are unable to be out of bed, ask to have the bedside table, telephone and call light in easy reach.

*Because care providers cannot remain at a patient's bedside at all times, we encourage you or your family to approach the nursing staff if you feel you need someone with you most of the time.

*Notify the nursing staff if you fall while in the hospital.
