Great Plains achieves General Trauma designation
(December 12, 2007)
Effective October 03, 2007 Great Plains Regional Medical Center (GPRMC) achieved a General Trauma designation. The hospital has been working on this for some time. The champion of this effort was Wanda Cooper, RNC. Through the support and commitment of the hospital Board, CEO, MedStaff, Senior Management, frontline staff, the hospital was able to successfully meet the criteria for said designation.
Ms. Cooper is the coordinator of the Trauma Program at GPRMC and Dr. Christopher Seip is the Medical Director of the program. The hospital treats about 500 trauma cases annually, comprehensive to basic.
The role of the General Trauma Center is to provide initial treatment and stabilization (surgical as appropriate) and/or provide medical and surgical services to those patients who can be maintained in a stable or improving condition. General trauma centers are required to have nurses and physicians in-house 24 hours a day, with surgical personnel who can provide surgical intervention immediately. We at GPRMC employ Trauma Certified RNs and Board Certified Residency trained Emergency Medicine Physicians that are in-house 24 hours a day, 7 a day week. We are the only hospital west of Lincoln, NE that has this component. Great Plains Regional Medical Center additionally offers a broad range of specialists available for consultation and/or care, with comprehensive diagnostic capabilities and specialized equipment. The program also provides outreach trauma education to the surrounding hospital within the region.
