If consumers take switching costs into account when choosing to change suppliers of a product or service, is it reasonable to assume that those same costs apply to physicians when looking at potential job changes? Several switching costs seem applicable to the area of physician retention including economic risk, learning costs, set up costs, personal relationship loss and associative brand loss, among others.
This program will discuss the importance of retention (through the physician’s eyes as opposed to the classical employer view) as health care enters into a time of significant change. Three significant trends in U.S. Healthcare make care availability difficulties for patients a certainty, barring significant change: (1) the aging of the population, with the inevitable growth in utilization of healthcare services by this demographic; (2) the reduction in physician hours worked and patients served; and (3) the increasing complexity of care that technology and fear of litigation drive, increasing physician time per patient.
