Overview: On May 20, 2009, President Obama signed the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act into law (“FERA”), which established broad changes to the False Claims Act. Also on May 20, 2009, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new and aggressive task force called the Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team (HEAT) to combat Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse. This seminar will provide participants with an overview of the FCA and the changes expected from these initiatives.

Amy Fouts is an associate in McKenna, Long, & Aldridge LLP’s health care group. Her practice focuses on a variety of litigation, regulatory and compliance issues. She advises clients on many aspects of health care law, with a particular emphasis on fraud and abuse, corporate compliance, Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, false claims and other government investigation issues, and defense of allegations of False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback, and Stark Law violations. Amy has published a variety of articles relating to billing and reimbursement and fraud and abuse matters. She has also presented at several educational programs and professional conferences on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, billing and coding documentation issues and fraud and abuse matters.
Vimala Devassy is an associate with McKenna, Long, & Aldridge LLP. She has experience representing hospitals, nursing homes, health insurers and managed care organizations, clinical labs, and state agencies. She advises clients in connection with corporate and regulatory health matters.
